Rinnai Tankless Error Code 71: What a Gas Solenoid Valve Circuit Fault Means for East Cooper Homes

If your Rinnai tankless water heater flashes error code 71, it is telling you something is wrong in the gas solenoid valve circuit. On Rinnai units, that usually means the control board is seeing a fault with one or more of the gas solenoids labeled SV0, SV1, SV2, and SV3 (some models also list SV4). Those solenoids are the electrically controlled valves that open and close to meter gas into the burners. When that circuit faults, the heater will shut down rather than risk sending gas when it cannot confirm the valves are doing their job.

What code 71 actually means

Rinnai’s diagnostic manuals describe code 71 as a solenoid valve circuit fault (SV0–SV3). In plain terms, the board is not happy with the electrical path to the gas valve solenoids. That can be a wiring issue, a failed solenoid coil, moisture on the gas valve, a grounded heater circuit, or a bad PC board. On many SENSEI models, there is also a simple but easy-to-miss cause: the single DIP switch on the PC board left in the ON position. In the ON position, that switch electrically shuts off the main gas solenoid and can throw a 71. It should be OFF for normal operation.

Common causes we chase on service calls

• DIP switch on the PC board set incorrectly (must be OFF on the models that use that switch for this function).

• Loose, broken, or damaged wiring between the gas valve solenoids and the PC board.

• A grounded electrical circuit feeding the heater.

• Moisture in the plastic sensing tube that runs from the bottom of the combustion box back to the gas valve on indoor units — often from a leaking heat exchanger or condensate draining back through the vent instead of out a proper condensate drain.

• An open or failed solenoid coil inside the gas valve assembly (no resistance on a coil that should have a reading).

• A mechanical problem inside the gas valve that keeps it from opening under load, even if a cold resistance check looks fine.

• A failed PC board, after the valve and wiring have been ruled out.

Coastal humidity around Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island makes condensate management matter. If venting is wrong or a condensate drain is missing or clogged, moisture can reach the gas valve side and take the valve with it.

Safe checks you can do at home

Keep this light. Do not open the cabinet, unplug harnesses, or try to ohm out solenoids yourself.

1. Write down the code and when it started (after a storm, after recent service, only on hot water demand, and so on).

2. Turn the unit off at the controller, wait a minute, and turn it back on once. If 71 clears and stays gone, still plan a service visit — intermittent valve-circuit faults often come back.

3. If you smell gas, hear hissing, or see water inside or under the heater, shut off gas and power and call right away. Do not keep cycling the unit.

4. Ask anyone who recently worked on the unit whether the PC board DIP switch was left in the correct (OFF) position.
