Water Tastes Salty After Your Softener Regenerates on Daniel Island? What Usually Causes It

Every so often a neighbor on Daniel Island tells me their morning coffee tasted like seawater, or the kids complained the tap water was salty. Nine times out of ten, there's a water softener in the garage that just regenerated.

I'm Christian with Avery & Sons Plumbing + Tankless. Softened water can taste a little different, but it should never taste salty. When it does, the softener is telling you something isn't finishing the way it should. Here's what usually causes it and what to check.

How it's supposed to work

A softener cleans its resin beads by pulling salty brine out of the brine tank, running it through the resin, and then rinsing that brine down the drain line before putting the system back in service. If any part of that last rinse comes up short, leftover brine ends up in your house plumbing instead of the drain.

The usual causes

  • Someone used water during regeneration. Most softeners regenerate in the middle of the night for a reason. If a shower, dishwasher, or irrigation zone runs during the cycle, some brine can get pulled into the house before the rinse finishes.

  • The clock is wrong. After a power outage, many control valves lose the time and start regenerating in the afternoon or evening, right when the family is using water. Our post on checking your softener clock after a power outage walks through it.

  • A kinked or clogged drain line. If the drain line is pinched behind the softener, routed too high, or partly clogged, brine can't flush out fast enough during the rinse, so it stays in the tank and comes out at your faucets.

  • A dirty injector or flow control. The small injector (venturi) and drain flow control in the valve head can gunk up with sediment or salt mush. That throws off the draw and rinse timing.

  • Too much water in the brine tank. If the refill setting is off or the float isn't shutting off right, the brine tank makes more brine than the rinse can clear.

  • Low water pressure at the softener. A softener needs decent pressure to draw and rinse properly. A clogged whole-house filter ahead of it can starve it.

What you can check today

  • Look at the clock on the control valve. Make sure the time of day is right and regeneration is set for the overnight hours, usually around 2 a.m.

  • Follow the drain line. Make sure it isn't kinked, crushed, or looped up high, and that it ends at a proper drain with an air gap.

  • Check the brine tank water level. Some standing water is normal on many models, but a tank that's nearly full of water is not.

  • Run cold water for a few minutes. If the salty taste clears, it was leftover brine from one bad cycle. If it comes back after every regeneration, the softener needs service.

Why it's worth fixing

A one-time salty glass isn't dangerous for most healthy adults, but repeated salty water isn't something you want to drink, cook with, or give to houseplants. It also means your softener is wasting salt and may not be fully cleaning the resin, so hard water can start sneaking back. For more on the sodium question in general, see our post on whether softened water is OK to drink, and if you're wondering about the salt itself, here's our guide to which softener salt to use.

What the repair usually looks like

When we come out for this, we check the settings, clean or replace the injector and screen, check the drain flow control, straighten out the drain line, and run a manual regeneration while we watch it draw and rinse. Most of the time it's a straightforward service call, not a new softener.
