Rinnai Tankless Error Code 41: What a Freeze Protection Sensor Fault Means for East Cooper Homes

If your Rinnai tankless is flashing Code 41 in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, or anywhere else in East Cooper, the heater is telling you it has lost a good reading from its freeze protection sensor, the small thermistor that tells the unit how cold the air around it is getting.

I'm Christian with Avery & Sons Plumbing + Tankless. With fall settling in around Charleston, this is a good one to understand before the first cold snap, so here's a plain walkthrough of what Code 41 means, what you can safely check, and when to call.

What Code 41 actually means

Rinnai uses Code 41 for a problem with the freeze protection sensor (on outdoor models, the outside air temperature thermistor). The heater relies on that reading to decide when to switch on its built-in freeze protection, which keeps water inside the unit from freezing and cracking parts.

When the sensor is unplugged, cut, shorted, or reading wrong, the board flags Code 41. What happens next depends on the model:

  • On many units, including outdoor models, the heater keeps running and the display alternates between your set temperature and Code 41. You still get hot water, but the unit is warning you.

  • On some indoor models, the heater won't fire at all while the sensor is faulty, so you'll see Code 41 and get no hot water.

Either way, the code clears on its own once the sensor problem is fixed.

Why it matters here in the Lowcountry

We don't get many hard freezes in Charleston, but we get enough. A handful of nights a year can dip low enough to matter, and a lot of tankless units around Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, and the islands are mounted outside on an exterior wall. A heater with a bad freeze sensor may not know when to protect itself. That's how a small sensor problem can turn into a cracked heat exchanger after one cold January night.

So even if the water is still hot, Code 41 is worth fixing before winter, not after.

Common causes we see

Loose or damaged wiring. The sensor harness runs back to the circuit board. A connector that worked loose, or a wire that got pinched or chewed, is a common culprit.

Sensor covered up. The sensor needs to read the actual air. If insulation, a pipe wrap, or a cover got packed over it, it can't do its job.

A failed thermistor. Sensors wear out. A tech can test its resistance against Rinnai's spec and confirm whether it's bad.

Weather and critters. On outdoor installs near the marsh or the beach, moisture, salt air, and the occasional critter can work on wiring over time.

Safe checks you can do yourself

Keep it simple. If you ever smell gas, leave and call your gas utility. Don't troubleshoot.

  1. Write down what you see. Is Code 41 alternating with your temperature, or is it showing alone with no hot water? That tells your tech a lot.

  2. Look around the unit. If you can see insulation, a cover, or debris stacked against the heater, clear it away. Don't open the front panel.

  3. Try one hard reset. Turn it off at the controller, kill the breaker for 30 seconds, then power it back on. If Code 41 comes right back, stop there.

Don't open the unit to check wiring or test the sensor yourself. That's live electrical work inside a gas appliance.

When to call a pro

Call if Code 41 keeps coming back after a reset, if you've lost hot water with it, or if your heater is mounted outside and we're heading into cooler months. A service visit should check the sensor wiring back to the board, make sure the sensor is open to the air, test the thermistor's resistance, and replace it if it's out of spec. While we're there, it's a good time to talk about a descaling flush, because our hard water around East Cooper is behind a lot of the other codes we see.

Soft next step

If your Rinnai is showing Code 41, clear anything covering the unit, try one hard reset, and get it looked at before the next cold night if the code sticks. Avery & Sons Plumbing + Tankless can help. Call (843) 305-5555 or visit averysplumbing.com. We're local, we work on these heaters every week, and we'll tell you straight what it needs.

A tankless that can't tell it's cold can't protect itself, so let's get that sensor reading right before winter shows up.
