Boil-Water Notice Lifted on Daniel Island? What to Do With Your Softener, RO, and Fridge Filter
When a water main breaks or pressure drops, the utility sometimes puts part of Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, or the rest of East Cooper under a boil-water notice. Most folks know to boil water while it's in effect. Fewer know what to do once it's lifted, and that's where filters and softeners get forgotten.
I'm Christian with Avery & Sons Plumbing + Tankless. Here's the straight checklist I'd give a neighbor once the all-clear comes through.
Why the equipment matters after the all-clear
A boil-water notice means water that may not have been safe ran through your pipes. Anything that holds or traps water along the way, like a filter cartridge, a softener tank, a reverse osmosis storage tank, an ice bin, or a water heater, can still have that water sitting in it after the main is fixed.
The street is clean again. The question is whether everything inside your house has been flushed and refreshed too.
First, follow the utility's instructions
Your water provider will spell out how they want homes flushed when the notice ends. Read that first and follow it. It usually starts with running the cold taps for a few minutes so fresh water from the main pushes out what was sitting in your lines. Do that before you touch anything else on this list.
The household checklist
Fridge water and ice. Throw out any ice made during the notice, run a few batches and toss those too, and replace the fridge filter. That little cartridge sat full of the questionable water the whole time.
Under-sink and reverse osmosis systems. Change the cartridges and empty the RO storage tank so it refills with clean water. Many RO systems also call for sanitizing the tank and lines; your owner's manual will have the steps.
Whole-house carbon or sediment filters. Swap the cartridges. A filter that caught contaminated water shouldn't stay in service just because it isn't due by the calendar yet.
Water softener. Run a manual regeneration so the resin tank gets backwashed and rinsed with clean water. Some manufacturers also recommend a sanitizing step; check the manual or give us a call.
Water heater. Run your hot taps after the cold ones so the heater turns over its water. If a tank heater is set low, the utility or CDC guidance may suggest draining and refilling it. Tankless units hold very little water, so running the hot taps usually clears them.
Do the cold flush first, then the filters and softener, then the hot side. That order keeps you from pulling old water back through new cartridges.
What not to do
Don't assume your filter made the water safe during the notice. Most household carbon and sediment filters are built for taste, odor, and grit, not for germs, so keep boiling until the notice is officially lifted, filter or not.
And don't skip the fridge filter because it's a hassle to find. It's the one people forget most, and it's the water your kids drink straight from the door.
Easy next step
